Zheng Yun states it refers to the beginning of the replacement of primary teeth with permanent teeth. Han Shi Waizhuan (Outer Commentary on the Book of Odes) states that boys grow teeth at eight months and begin to replace them at eight years of age. Yu Xin in Qi Wang Xian (The Prince of Qi, Xian) writes that even before reaching the age of replacing teeth, one was already discussing the great affairs of the world. Additionally, Ji Yun states it is pronounced tiao. The meaning is the same.
