Jade Chapters (Yupian) states the pronunciation is song. It is the same as the character (sōng). Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) explains: The Central Peak, Mount Songgao, is a character formed by combining mountain and high, classified as an ideogram (zhǐshì). White Tiger Hall Discussions (Baihu Tong) states: Among the Five Peaks, only the Central Peak includes the character for high, because the center is located in the middle of the four directions and can be considered high, therefore it is called Songgao. Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Treatise on Administrative Geography (Junguo Zhi) records: In Yangcheng County, Yingchuan Commandery, there is Mount Songgao. Commentary states: The Outer Square Mountain mentioned in the Tribute of Yu (Yu Gong) is Mount Song. Book of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Annals of Emperor Wu (Wudi Ji) records: On the next day, he personally ascended Songgao, and the officials of the Censorate were by the temple. The soldiers and clerks all heard the sound of long live being shouted three times. There is also a surname Song. Correcting Errors (Zheng'e) states: The ancient form of Song was written as (chóng). Wei Zhao’s Commentary on Discourses of the States (Guoyu Zhu) states: It is interchangeably used with (chóng). Correct Meaning (Zhengzitong) states: According to this, the sound and meaning of (chóng) and (chóng) are the same, but one should not combine the characters (chóng) and (sōng) into a single character.
