Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili): Dig the pit to reveal the coffin. Commentary: A pit or cavity for burying a coffin. Sub-commentary: The term refers to laying out, indicating the placement of a corpse within a pit; Zheng Xuan interprets this as a pit for burying a coffin.
Yan Yanzhi, Lamentation for the Deceased: Warning of the coolness while in the pit, and at the end of autumn proceeding to the final burial. Commentary: Three days after death, the body is laid out in a pit, and three months later, it is interred.
Also pronounced yi. The meaning is the same. Sometimes also written in a variant form (yi).
