Pronounced si (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): A river that branches off and returns to the main stream.
Erya: Explaining Waters: Water that splits and flows back into the main stream is called a si. Commentary: This refers to any branching flow that returns to the original body of water.
Shiming: A si is a stopping point. It is like when one departs to accomplish a task, finishes it, and then returns.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Another definition is an exhausted, blocked waterway.
Erya: Explaining Hills: An exhausted, blocked waterway is called a si. Commentary: This refers to water channels that are blocked and impassable, which are named si. They may also be called a stream (xi).
Book of Odes (Shijing), Shao Nan section: The Yangtze River has a branching stream (si).
Mu Hua: Sea Rhapsody: Branches and channels form deep pools, swirling and surging to become a si.
A river name. Located in Chenggao County, Henan.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): Mount Fuxi is the source of the Si River, which flows north and empties into the Yellow River.
History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Annals of Emperor Gao: The Han army repeatedly provoked the Chu forces at Chenggao, but the Chu army would not come out, so the Han sent men to insult them. The Grand Marshal Cao Jiu grew angry and led his troops across the Si River. When they were halfway across, the Han attacked and soundly defeated the Chu army. Commentary: Chen Zan says: This is the present-day Si River east of Chenggao. Yan Shigu says: This river name was traditionally read as fan, but today the local people call it si.
A county name. Guangyu Ji (Geography of the Unified Realm): Si River County belongs to Kaifeng Prefecture; it was the ancient territory of East Guo, became Chenggao during the Han, and was named Si River during the Sui.
An island name. Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing Zhu): Longyang County has Si Island, which is twenty li long; Li Heng, the Administrator of Danyang under Wu, planted citrus trees there.
Mengsi, the place where the sun sets. Chu Ci: Questions of Heaven: Emerging from the Valley of Boiling Springs, it rests at Mengsi.
