Pronounced su. According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters), it is the su-shuang bird. It is one of the five sacred birds of the cardinal directions: in the east is the faming, in the south is the jiaoming, in the west is the sushuang, in the north is the youchang, and in the center is the fenghuang. Also written in a variant form (sushuang). In the Fu on the Imperial Park (Shanglin fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned as the hong-su-gu-bao. Guo Pu states that su refers to the sushuang bird. According to the Miscellaneous Records of the Western Capital (Xijing zaji), when Sima Xiangru returned to Chengdu, he was poor and used his su-shuang fur coat to barter for wine with a merchant to enjoy with his wife, Wenjun. Also, according to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), pronounced suo. The meaning is the same. For further details, see the entry for the character shuang.
