One source says it is the name of a river. Originally written as shi. The Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing) states: The Shi River flows southeast from Guangyang Township in Jiujiang, passes through Hefei County, and flows east into Chao Lake. Additionally, in the Account of the Boat Trip through the Wangzhou Gorges (Wangzhou xiachuan ji), it is written: Where the gorge water is turbulent and precipitous, causing water to strike rocks and surge forth, it is called a fountain; where it forms eddies and swirls, it is called a brain.
