According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is she (falling tone). It is the name of a river. According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing), the Yangtze River has a lake mouth on the left. The water connects to Lake Tai, and further east it joins the mouth of the Shuan River.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is nie (falling tone). The meaning is the same.
Also pronounced ni (falling tone). The term se-shuan describes the appearance of rain and dew.
Also, in the Luxuriant Gems of the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu Fanlu), in the Eulogy on Mountains and Rivers, it is stated that small ones can be used as boats or carriages to float upon the water. The commentary notes that shuan refers to things like floating rafts.
