From the Tang Rhyme Dictionary (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced with a fanqie spelling of "er yan qie," sounding the same as rǎn.
The Jade Chapters (Yupian) states that it refers to the appearance of soft, drooping hair. It also carries the meaning of proceeding, advancing, or gradually encroaching. It is also written in a variant form, rǎn.
