Pronounced rao (level tone). According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the pronunciation is rao.
According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it means many, full, abundant, thick, and surplus. It also means to increase and to have remaining.
Book of Rites (Liji), Section on Summary of Propriety (Quli): In a grand feast, one does not consult divination, and one does not seek abundance in wealth. Commentary: Wealth here means provision. Provide only what is necessary, do not exceed the limits of propriety.
History of the Former Han Dynasty (Qianhan Shu), Biography of Chen Ping: After Ping married the daughter of the Zhang family, his financial resources became increasingly abundant. He also said to the King of Han: Your Majesty is able to enrich people with titles and fiefs.
