Pronounced rui (falling tone) according to Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun). According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is called rui in the regions of Qin and Jin, and mosquito in the region of Chu. In the Mencius (Mengzi), it is written: Flies and mosquitoes for a time bite at it. In the Xunzi, Encouraging Learning (Quanxue pian), it is written: When vinegar turns sour, mosquitoes gather there. In the Record of Rites by Dai the Elder (Da dai li), it is written: The white bird is what is called a mosquito or midge.
