Its pronunciation, according to Tang Yun, is qù yuē qiē. According to Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengyun, it is qǐ yuē qiē, with a qiang entering tone. According to Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means "to restrain desire". It is formed from the radical Seal (jié) and the phonetic component gǔ. According to Zengyun, it means "to stop" or "not to accept". As stated in Mencius: "To refuse it is disrespectful." Also, according to Guangyun, it means "to retreat" or "to withdraw". From the Biography of Yuan Ang in the Former Han (Qian Han Shu): "Yuan Ang led Lady Shen to withdraw her seat." The commentary by Su Lin states: "qù means to withdraw it." Also, from the "Marriage of a Scholar" chapter in the Book of Rites (Yili): "Opening the assembly, turning south of the dun vessel." The commentary states: "qù means to look up, referring to looking up at the ground." According to Yunhui, the character qù (this entry) is vulgarly written as the character què. It is also erroneously written as another variant form.
