Broad Rimes (Guangyun): Pronounced yan (rising tone). Same as the character for lead. Huainan Masters (Huainanzi), Section on Customs: Lead cannot be used to make knives. History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Biography of the Prince of Jiangdu: Used a pestle made of lead for pounding. Commentary: Lead is a metal similar to tin. Also, Biography of Jia Yi: Precious swords like Moye are considered dull, while knives made of lead are considered sharp. Also refers to the name of a state. Literary Expositor (Erya), Interpretation of Places: To the east reaching Taiyuan, to the west reaching Bin State, to the south reaching Puqian, and to the north reaching Zhuli, are called the extremely distant lands of the four directions. Commentary: These are all states at the extreme ends of the four directions. Also, Broad Rimes (Guangyun): Pronounced zhong (flat tone); Collected Rimes (Jiyun): Pronounced zhong (flat tone).
