According to the Corrected Characters (Zhengzitong), this is a variant form of the character 蚈. According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), it is pronounced qian. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced qian, sounding the same as the word for lead. It is the name of a type of insect, referring to a firefly. According to the Annals of Master Lu (Lüshi Chunqiu), rotting grass can transform into fireflies. Also, according to the Huainan Masters (Huainanzi) in the chapter on Military Strategy (Binglue Xun), the soldiers of an excellent general are like the feet of the firefly. The commentary notes that this insect is also known as a horse-tether. The character is written with the sound component meaning level or flat (jian).
