Pronounced qian. Name of a river. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), the river flows from Dangqu in Ba Commandery, merging into the Yangtze River to the southwest. Also a county name. According to the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), troops were sent to surround the regions of Liu and Qian in the State of Chu. The commentary notes that Qian is located to the southwest of Liu County in Lujiang.

Note: According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), this character is formed with the water radical and phonetic element qin. The character qin contains the element zan at the top. The Correct Character Guide (Zhengzitong) incorrectly uses the element ji, which is inaccurate. This has been corrected.
