In the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), pronounced yi. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), and Standard Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced yi; the sound is the same as yi. The Jade Chapters (Yupian) explains it as yi yu, which is an expression of praise and admiration. It is also written in a variant form (yi). The Book of Odes (Shijing), in the Hymns of Shang (Shangsong), contains the phrase yi yu na yu. The character form is derived from the Radical: Lack (qiàn), and is different from the character yi. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) states that all characters related to exhaling from the mouth are derived from the Radical: Lack (qiàn), such as the characters chui, xi, xu, ou, and tan, which are all formed in this manner.
