According to Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui), pronounced po; according to Proper Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced po; the tone is level.
As defined in Explaining Simple and Analyzing Compound Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a hillside. In the customs of the Dian region, mountain ridges are called long slopes, and those that are high and steep are called mutual-viewing slopes.
In the History of Tang (Tangshu), Record of the Hanlin Academy, it is noted that Emperor Dezong moved the Hanlin Academy to Golden Bell Slope.
Also, it refers to a flying slope. According to Records of the Court and the Countryside (Chaoye Qianzai), during the Yongchang era of Emperor Yuan of Jin, the western slope of Fushui Inn in Qinzhou flew in broad daylight for four or five miles, landing directly upon the Red Water Slope; the mulberry fields and wheat ridges remained undisturbed.
