According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), the fanqie pronunciation is p-an, sounding like pan. It refers to the melting or dissolving of ice. It is commonly used interchangeably with the character pan.
As recorded in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Bei: If a man would bring home his wife, he should do so while the ice is not yet melted.
Furthermore, the Rhyme Supplement (Yunbu) notes that it can also be read with the fanqie pronunciation p-ian, sounding like pian.
As written in Su Shi’s Poems of Yanshan: Attacking the strong is more difficult than working jade, but taking advantage of a flaw is as easy as ice melting. As long as the Central Plains remain well-governed, the enemy's power will surely change.
