According to Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), pronounced mou. This is a type of harmful insect that eats grain.
According to Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it was originally written in the variant form (mao). These are pests that consume the roots of plants; when officials plunder the wealth of the common people, these pests appear.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes (Xiaoya): And their mao and zei.
Commentary: Those that consume roots are called mao, and those that consume stalks and joints are called zei.
Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Thirteenth Year of Duke Cheng: Leading our mao and zei (referring to those who endanger the nation).
