Ancient form. According to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced man (falling tone), meaning slow or sluggish.
Xunzi, Not Careless Chapter (Bugou pian): The gentleman is broad and thick without being sluggish.
Also, in the Cultivating the Self Chapter (Xiushen pian): To follow the rules of ritual is to be harmonious and smooth; to not follow the rules of ritual is to be chaotic and sluggish.
Also the same as man, meaning filthy or dissolute.
Xunzi, Honor and Disgrace Chapter (Rongru pian): To be filthy, dissolute, bullying, and thieving is a practice that often invites danger.
Yang Liang commentary: Man should be written as man, referring to water overflowing an object, which is called man.
