Erya: Explaining Insects (Erya): The long is a termite. Commentary: Refers to a large, multicolored red ant. Also refers to the longzhi, a type of beast.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On Fuli Mountain there is a beast that resembles a fox but has nine tails and nine heads; it has tiger claws and is named longzhi. Its cry sounds like the wailing of an infant, and it eats people.
Also refers to the qu-long. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji): Biography of Turtle Divination: Pearls like a bright moon originate from the rivers and seas, hidden within clamshells, guarded by the qu-long.
Also refers to the gui-long, a type of deity. Zhuangzi: Discussion on Life (Zhuangzi): In the nether regions of the northeast, there are the beia and the gui-long jumping about. Commentary: The gui-long has the shape of a child, stands one foot and four inches tall, wears black clothes, a red headscarf and a large hat, and carries a sword and a halberd.
