According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a cormorant. According to the Strange Things Record (Yiwu Zhi) by Yang Fu, the cormorant does not lay eggs; it gives birth to live young. According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), specifically the chapter on birds, it is defined as a pheasant-like bird. The commentary by Guo Pu states that this is not yet fully understood.
