Zhengzitong (Comprehensive Dictionary of Characters): The mouth is large and the scales are fine, resembling the mandarin fish. It is several inches long and has four sets of gills; commonly known as the four-gilled fish. It appears around the seventh and eighth lunar months in the Wujiang and Songjiang regions, where it is especially abundant. While the perch of the world all have two sets of gills, only those of the Songjiang river have four.
Biography of Zuo Ci (Zuo Ci Zhuan) from the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu): The only thing lacking is the perch from the Songjiang river in the Wu region. Note: The Biographies of Immortals (Shenxian Zhuan) records that the Songjiang region produces superior perch, with a flavor different from that of other places.
Biography of Zhang Han (Zhang Han Zhuan) from the Book of Jin (Jinshu): Upon seeing the autumn wind rise, he recalled the water shield soup and minced perch of the Songjiang river, and thereupon ordered his carriage to return to his hometown.
