In the Mencius (Mengzi), it is said: "The wife separates the hemp thread." Zhao Qi notes: "Refining hemp is called lu." Also, in the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Economic Merchants (Huozhi Zhuan), it states: "The region west of the mountains is abundant in timber, bamboo, and lu." The note explains: "Lu is a type of ramie that can be made into cloth." In the Five Classics Characters (Wujing Wenzi), it is also written as lu in classical texts.
