Literary Expositor (Erya), Explanation of Plants (Shicao): Jue is bie.
Guo Commentary: When it first sprouts, it has no leaves and is edible.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Shao South (Zhaonan): Speaking of gathering its ferns.
Sub-commentary (Shu): In the Zhou and Qin regions it is called jue; in Qi and Lu it is called bie. Popularly, it is said that because when it first sprouts it resembles the foot of a turtle, it is so named.
Amplified Elegantiae (Piya): When the fern first sprouts, it is shaped like the clenched foot of a sparrow; it is also like a person's foot stumbling, hence its name.
