Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explaining and Analyzing Characters) states it is the act of gathering to drink wine.
Guangyun (Broad Rhymes) defines it as pooling money to drink wine.
Book of Rites (Liji), in the chapter on Ritual Vessels (Liqi), states: Zengzi said, the Zhou rites, were they perhaps like a pooled contribution? The commentary notes that pooling money to drink wine is called ju.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), in the Biography of Money-makers (Huozhi Zhuan), states: If there is nothing to offer for sacrifices during the year, contribute food and drink. The commentary by Xu Guang states it refers to gathering together to eat.
