Wu Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Jade (yù) Jia Kangxi strokes: 10 Page 729, Entry 21 Pronounced jia According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a woman's head ornament. Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Yong: The secondary hairpin with six jia. The commentary states: The jia hairpin is the most magnificent of all head ornaments, used to distinguish noble status. The supplementary note says: The secondary hairpin is an ornament added to a hairpin that has already been inserted, similar to the swinging ornaments on modern hairpins. Master Qian states: Modern people add ornaments to swinging hairpins, decorated with pearls. The minimum is six, while others may double that amount or go up to thirty-six. The Book of Odes mentions six jia, so the number of ancient jade ornaments was generally six. Master Kong states: The queen's cross-hairpin is made of jade, hanging on both sides of the secondary hairpin, facing the ears, with jade ear-plugs suspended below by silk cords. It is called jia because it is an ornament added to the secondary hairpin after it has already been inserted. Illustrated Record of Ancient Vessels (Guqi Tu): The jia is an ornament added to the secondary hairpin. It is shaped like a mouth, with a length and width of only one inch. Textual Research: Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: The secondary hairpin with six jia. Following the original text, corrected Odes of Yong to Odes of Wei. The commentary states: The jia hairpin is the most magnificent of ornaments, used to distinguish status. The secondary hairpin is the addition of an ornament to a hairpin that is already inserted. Note that the phrase regarding the insertion of the hairpin belongs to the supplementary note, not the original commentary; added the note character before the supplementary text as per the original. Master Kong states: Jia means to add. Note that the original text does not contain the three characters for adding jia; they have been omitted. Because it is an addition to the secondary hairpin already in place, it is called jia. Note that the original text contains the four characters for called jia before the secondary hairpin; they have been added.
