According to Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced hu. According to Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun) and Rhyme Anthology (Yunhui), it is pronounced hu (falling tone), with a sound similar to hu (falling tone). Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) explains: Youhu is the name of an ancient state. It was a fiefdom of a vassal with the same surname as the Xia Dynasty; during the battle at Gan, it was located in Hu County, where there was Hu Valley.
It also refers to the Sanghu, a type of bird. Book of Odes (Shijing), Minor Odes of the Kingdom (Xiaoya) states: The chirping Sanghu birds have beautiful feathers. Commentary: The Sanghu is the qiezhi bird.
There is also the Danghu bird. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), Praise by Guo Pu states: Birds fly by their wings, but the Danghu bird flies by its whiskers.
It is also a title of an official. Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Year 17 of Duke Zhao records: The nine hu were nine types of agricultural officials responsible for restraining the excessive behavior of the people. Commentary: Hu means to restrain.
It also refers to a tail. Later, following the emperor on excursions was called hucong. Sima Xiangru, Rhapsody on the Shanglin Park (Shanglin Fu) writes: Escorting the emperor and maneuvering freely. Notes on Remaining Green (Liuqing Zhazha) explains: It refers to following the Son of Heaven, chasing wild animals, and galloping in all directions.
Bahu refers to being overbearing and tyrannical. History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Annals of Emperor Zhi records: Emperor Zhi called Liang Ji the tyrannical general.
It also means to wear or drape. Qu Yuan, Encountering Sorrow (Lisao) writes: Draping myself in jiangli and pi-fragrant herbs.
Also, the Literary Expositor (Erya), Interpretation of Mountains states: A massive mountain is called hu.
Sanghu also refers to a hermit. Songs of Chu (Chuci), Nine Declarations (Jiuzhang) writes: Jieyu shaved his head, and Sanghu walked naked.
Huhu means broad or extensive. Book of Rites (Liji), Tan Gong states: You should not be overly ostentatious.
It is also a surname. Popular Customs (Fengsu Tong) records: In the State of Zhao, there was a man named Hu Zhe.
