Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): To rely on, to depend on.
Classic of History (Shangshu): Relying on evil deeds and never repenting. Also, in the Biography of Bi (Biming): Relying on extravagance and thus extinguishing morality.
The father is called hu, and the mother is called shi.
Classic of Poetry (Shijing): Having no father to rely on, having no mother to depend on.
Parents are collectively called hu.
Classic of Poetry (Shijing): Upon whom can parents rely?
Also written as a variant form (hù).
