Explanation of Characters (Shuowen): Objects such as pearls or jade included among the items gifted to a grieving family are called han. It is also written in a variant form (han).
Book of Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Ministry of Spring, Office of Auspicious Symbols (Dianrui): Provide the han-jade. Commentary: Han-jade refers to jade pieces placed on both sides of a deceased person's cheeks and inside the mouth.
It is also commonly written as (han). History of Jin (Jinshu), Biography of Huangfu Mi: The items for the han.
Also, in the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun): Pronounced han (rising tone). The meaning is the same.
Textual research: In the Book of Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Ministry of Spring, Office of Auspicious Symbols (Dianrui), it states: Provide the han-jade. The commentary states: Han-jade is placed on the left and right of the jaw and inside the mouth. Strictly according to the original text, the character for jaw has been corrected. Note that the character for jaw and the character for han are the same.
