Tang Rhyme (Tangyun): Same as birch. Also, Tang Rhyme (Tangyun): Pronounced huo.
Erya: Explanations of Trees (Erya Shi Mu): Huo is called luo. Commentary: It can be used as raw material for cups and utensils. Xing Commentary: Huo is also called luosuo, which means plain wood.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes (Xiao Ya): Do not soak the huo firewood. Lu Ji Commentary: Huo is an elm tree. Its leaves are like those of the elm, and its bark is tough. If peeled in lengths of several feet, it can be used for ropes, and its wood can be used for cups and utensils.
Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi): Originally huo was a variant form of the tree of heaven (chu), but following the Correct Meaning Dictionary (Zhengzitong), it has been corrected.
