Pronounced kuài
Name of a river. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen jiezi), the river originates at Huo Mountain and flows southwest into the Fen River. According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijing zhu), the Kuai River originates at Xianggao Mountain. Also, juan kuai refers to a small stream. In the Rhapsody on the Yangtze River (Jiang fu) by Guo Pu, it is mentioned as a small stream.
According to the Approaching Elegance (Erya), a water channel leading into a ditch is called a kuai.
According to the Rites of Zhou (Zhou li), under the Office of Earth and the Suiren, a group of one thousand households has a kuai. The sub-commentary states: a kuai is two xun wide and two ren deep.
