Pronounced he. Name of a bird.
Shuowen (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters): A type of bird resembling a pheasant, produced in the Shangdang region.
Zhengzitong (Comprehensive Dictionary of Characters): The feathers are yellow and black, and the head is brownish. It has hair like horns and a crest on its head. This bird is by nature fond of gathering in groups with its own kind. When a companion is harmed, it will go directly to fight, not ceasing even if it dies in battle.
Qinjing (Classic of Birds): The he is a bird of firm character. Li Shizhen says: Its feathers are blackish-yellow with a brownish tint, which is why it is called he. The bird with dark blue-black feathers is called a different name, and it has a straight and upright temperament. There is also the hedan, a bird that cries at night and prays for dawn.
Book of Rites (Liji), Monthly Ordinances (Yueling): The hedan does not cry.

There is also the heguan, which was created by King Wuling of Zhao to honor warriors.
Book of Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Treatise on Carriages and Clothing (Yufuzhi): The Tiger-Brave guards all wear heguan hats.
Yan Shigu commentary: This bird is produced in Shangdang, and because it fights until death without ceasing, its tail feathers are used to decorate the hats of military officials. There is also the heguan worn by recluses, which draws on the meaning of being courageous enough to withdraw from the world.

Yan Shigu commentary: Here the character he is pronounced fen and is interchangeable with the character fen; the fen sparrow is large and blue-green in color, produced in the Qiang region.
