According to Tang Rhyme, the fanqie is gǔ qiè. According to Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zheng Rhyme, the fanqie is jū qiè; the character is pronounced gòu. According to Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): To accumulate wealth. It depicts the shape of two things crossing each other. Also, according to Yunhui: A number. Ten zǐ (a large number) is called gòu. Also, according to Yunhui: A place name. Also, zhōnggòu refers to the deep, secluded, and intricate parts of a palace. "Words from the inner chambers" — Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Yong (Yōng fēng). In the Biography of King Gong of Liang from the Former Han (Qian Han), it says: "heard words from the inner chambers." Commentary: Ying Shao says: Zhōnggòu refers to timber structures within a hall. Yan Shigu says: It refers to the interwoven timber of a house, likely the hidden, reclusive area within the women's quarters.
