Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and Rhyme Collection (Yunhui) define the pronunciation as fu-wei. Integrated Rhyme (Jiyun) defines the pronunciation as wei. Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) defines the pronunciation as fu-wei. All definitions indicate the pronunciation is fei.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to assist. Xu says that to assist means to straighten a bow, which is why the character contains the radical for tree.
In the Book of Documents (Shujing), Great Announcement (Dagao) states: The heavens assist with sincere words. In the Luo Announcement (Luogao), it states: Listen as I instruct you on the constant ways of assisting the people.
It is also identical to fei. It is the name of a tree. It can be used to make small tables. In the Book of Jin (Jinshu), Biography of Wang Xizhi, it is recorded that upon seeing a disciple’s table made of fei-wood, which was smooth and clean, he wrote upon it.
