Shen Collection, Middle Volume. Radical: Insect (chóng). Character: Fang. Kangxi stroke count: 10. Page 1077, Entry 12.
Pronounced fang. Zifang is the name of an insect, see the note under the character Zi. According to the Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), it is also written as Fang. In the Record of Music (Yueji) from the Book of Rites (Liji), it says, Things of the same type gather together. The commentary states that the term fang refers to an insect with a sentient nature, hence the name fang. Additionally, according to the Supplement to the Dictionary of Characters (Zihui bu), the Discourses Weighed in the Balance (Lunheng) states that when the moon wanes in the sky, the snail and the fang become chipped or incomplete, which is suspected to refer to the clam.
