Pronounced chou. Same as the character for recompense. In the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), it refers to a host filling a cup with wine to toast a guest. The commentary notes that this refers to the act of urging one to drink. The meaning of this character is associated with being thorough or complete, denoting loyalty and honesty.
Also, in the Book of Etiquette and Ceremonial (Yili), it refers to a host serving wine in return to a guest, accompanied by the presentation of silk and fur as gifts. The commentary states that serving wine to guests accompanied by gifts is called chou.
