Yin Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Roof (bù) 寶; Kangxi strokes: 20; Page 293, Entry 01 Archaic forms include 寚 and 珤. Pronounced bǎo. In the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it means precious. Composed of the roof radical, jade, and cowrie, with a phonetic component. Xu says it refers to that which people treasure. In the Guangyun, it means precious treasure. Also refers to an auspicious sign or a tally. Book of Changes (Yijing), Xici: The great treasure of the sage is his position. Book of Rites (Liji), Liyun: Heaven does not stint its way, Earth does not stint its treasures. Book of Odes (Shijing), Daya: Farming and harvesting are the treasures. Book of Documents (Shangshu), Lvao: To treasure only the virtuous is to make those nearby feel secure. In the Zengyun, it refers to an imperial seal, to value, or to be noble. Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Chunguan, Tianfu: All the jade tokens of the state and great precious vessels are stored there. Book of Documents (Shangshu), Lvao: Distributed precious jades to the states of the uncles. The Rites of Propriety (Li) states that of these four ritual vessels, one uses what one treasures to perform a formal visit. The commentary interprets this as the gui, zhang, bi, and cong jades. In ancient times, the Son of Heaven and the feudal lords used gui and bi jades as tally credentials; it was not until the Qin dynasty that the title Emperor's Imperial Seal was used, which was changed to Treasure in the Tang dynasty. Also, all coin inscriptions are referred to as Tongbao (current treasure). Also a surname. Also rhyming with the pronunciation bù. Book of Odes (Shijing), Daya: Bestowing upon you the great gui jade, to serve as your treasure. Rhymes with the word earth (tǔ). Lin, Agate Rhapsody (Manao Fu): The imperial way is not peaceful, the emperor inspects the prime assistants. Looking toward manifold blessings, enjoying the great treasure. Also written interchangeably as bǎo (to protect/treasure). Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), House of Lu: Do not lose the protective mandate bestowed by Heaven. The commentary notes to read it as bǎo. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), House of the Marquis of Liu: He saw the Yellow Stone at the foot of Gucheng, took it, and cherished/worshipped it. Xu Guang says: In the historical records, the characters for precious treasure are all written as bǎo. Verification: Book of Documents (Shangshu), Lvao, distributed precious jades to the states of the uncles. Following the original text, uncles (shūbó) has been corrected to uncles (bóshū). Rites of Propriety (Li), Pingyi: Gui, zhang, bi, and cong; of these four ritual vessels, one uses what one treasures to perform a formal visit. The commentary interprets this as the gui, zhang, bi, and cong jades. Note: Research indicates this text does not appear in the Rites of Propriety, Pingyi; it is located within the Yili, Pingyi. The text has been corrected accordingly.
