In the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), it is pronounced bi. In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is also pronounced bi. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a fence or barrier. In the Book of Rites (Liji), specifically the section on The Conduct of Scholars (Ruxing), it is written as a gate made of interlaced bamboo branches. The commentary notes that this refers to a door woven from brambles and bamboo. It also refers to a cart made of brushwood. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), during the twelfth year of the reign of Duke Xuan, it is written that they used a brushwood cart and tattered clothing to open up the mountain forests. The commentary notes that this refers to a cart made of brushwood. It is also noted in the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) that it is pronounced bi. The meaning is the same. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is commonly written in a variant form (bi).
