According to the Shuowen Jiezi, it means to cover; it is that which covers the bottom of a steamer. Also, in the commentary to the Artificers' Record (Kaogongji) of the Book of Rites (Zhouli), it refers to the wheel lining, which prevents the carriage from wobbling during travel. Additionally, according to the Supplement to the Collection of Characters (Zihui bu), it is pronounced bi (rising tone). In Buddhist scriptures, the term Jia-bi refers to patchouli.
