Pronounced bi.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a woven fence or barrier. In the Book of Rites (Liji), specifically the section on the conduct of a Confucian scholar, it mentions a gate made of woven bamboo and a small, wedge-shaped opening. The commentary explains that a gate made of woven bamboo is a gate made of interlaced brambles and bamboo.
It also refers to a cart made of brushwood. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), under the twelfth year of the Duke of Xuan, it is written: pulling a brushwood cart and wearing tattered clothes to open up the mountains and forests.
