According to Principles of the Six Writings (Liushu Gu), it is a smaller variety of the turtle dove, characterized by white spots on the neck, with a call that resembles that of a cuckoo. It is also referred to as bo gu or bu gu. Li Shizhen states: The pigeon is docile and prone to becoming attached to people, hence its name. The character bo is an imitation of its call.
