In the Explanation of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as a wall column. In the Western Capital, it was called a wall sash; present-day people call it a partition column. One theory states it refers to a rafter.
Also, in the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it appears in the term for a bracket system, defined as a bracket. In the Added Rhymes (Zengyun), it is defined as the support piece upon a column. In the Commentary on Miscellaneous Records (Liji Zaji Zhu), it is noted as a bracket carved in the shape of a mountain, known as a mountain-shaped joint, referring to the square wood atop a column.
