Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen) says it is a flag or pennant. Jade Chapter (Yupian) says it is a banner. Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) states that erecting a wooden post as a marker and tying colored silk to it is called a biao. Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) also states it is a marker worn on the head.
