Ancient text:
[Tang Yun] fāng bié qiè [Ji Yun] [Yun Hui] bǐ bié qiè [Zheng Yun] bì liè qiè, pronounced the same as "biān" (entering tone).
[Shuowen] Means to divide.
[Yupian] Means to distinguish.
[Zeng Yun] Means to discriminate.
[Book of Rites - Qu Li] "The sun and moon inform the lord, to strengthen their distinction."
[Erya - Shi Shan] "Small mountains separate large mountains, called xiān." [Note] Refers to small mountains not being connected to large mountains, called xiān.
[Huainanzi - Qi Su Xun] "The butcher's cutting and separating."
[Jin - Zhong Chang Ao, He Xing Fu] "All receive the same temperament, without distinction."
Also, fù bié, refers to a deed or bond.
[Zhou Li - Tian Guan - Xiao Zai] "Eightfold completion, listening to accusations and transmitting deeds." [Note] Zheng says: A large character is written on a scroll, and the middle character distinguishes it.

[Song - Xie Lian, Ye Ji Tan Guai Shi] "The poet sings of hesitation, scratching his head and singing of separation."
[Liang - Xun Ji, Zeng Yin Liang Zhou Shi] "Already made a bond of brotherhood, why speak of parting like clouds and rain."
