Guo Pu annotation: It resembles a mountain chicken but is smaller. The feathers on its crest and back are yellow, the lower abdomen is red, and the neck is a vivid, bright green.
Liu Jingshu in Garden of Marvels (Yiyuan) writes: The mountain chicken loves its own plumage; it dances upon seeing its reflection in the water, and due to dizziness, it often falls into the water and drowns. Thus, its beautiful appearance becomes a burden to itself.
Also refers to a pheasant-patterned ceremonial cap (biemian).
Rites of Zhou: Spring Officials: Overseer of Attire (Zhouli): The king wears the pheasant-patterned cap when performing sacrifices to ancestors or holding sacrificial archery ceremonies.
Shiming: The pheasant is a fierce and irritable type among pheasants, which is the mountain chicken. The name implies being pent up and stifled. Its temperament is impatient and easily frustrated; it cannot be captured alive and will inevitably commit suicide. Therefore, its image is painted on clothing to symbolize one who upholds upright and incorruptible integrity.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On Small Flower Mountain, there are many red pheasants; raising them can prevent fires.
