In the Erya (Erya), in the section Explaining Birds, it states that the wrens are called qiao when male and bi when female. The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) states that there is a bird on Gui Mountain whose cry sounds like bi. The Collection of Characters (Zihui) notes that this is different from the character for paralysis or numbness (wei bi).
