Chou Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Big (dà) Kangxi Strokes: 18 Page 254, Entry 18 Pronounced bei. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means large and imposing. It also means to press or compel. It further means anger; being angry while not intoxicated is called bi. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: Resentment presses upon the Central States, extending to the region of the Gui tribe. The commentary notes that this means from near to far, there is nowhere that does not feel resentment and anger. The original form of this character was written with three eyes and three bigs, but it has now been simplified to the form bi.
