Wei Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Plow (lěi) Kangxi Strokes: 10 Page 963, Entry 03 Collection of Characters (Pianhai): Pronounced ju. A type of agricultural tool similar to a plow. Complete Treatise on Agricultural Administration (Nongzheng Quanshu): The design of the harrow includes square harrows and figure-eight harrows. Like a plow, it is pulled by oxen, but it is wider horizontally and has more teeth; it is used after plowing. The plow is used for turning soil, where depth is the primary effect; the harrow is used for breaking up soil, where fineness is the primary effect. After harrowing, the land must also be leveled using a tined harrow and a wooden clod-breaker. Commonly written as a variant form (pa).
