Ancient text. Pronounced e.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states: It is the gē é. It has a long neck and is good at calling; its head is held high as if proud, hence it is called e.
Piya states: The goose has a neck like a tumor; currently in the Jiangdong region, it is called gē.
Li Shizhen says: The goose has green eyes, a yellow beak, and red webbed feet; it is good at swimming and calls at night in response to the watch drum.
The Classic of Birds (Qin Jing) says: Those whose feet are close to the tail are able to walk; geese and ducks are like this. When a goose sees an animal of a different species, it spreads its wings and calls. Another name for it is house goose (jia yan). It is also called leisurely goose (shu yan). It is also called lán lóu.
Also, Erya, Interpretation of Birds (Erya, Shi Niao): The leisurely goose is the goose.
Li Xun says: Wild ones are called geese, and domesticated ones are called geese.
