Pronounced zun (rising tone). Defined in Explaining Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) as to gather. Cited from the Book of Odes (Shijing): Those who gather together but speak ill of each other behind their backs. Note: In the modern version of the Book of Odes, Lesser Odes (Xiaoya), it is written with a different character. Additionally, there is a record in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of Autumn (Qiuguan), regarding court officials conversing; the commentary states that this refers to speaking. Both characters share the same meaning. Also defined in the Expanded Dictionary (Guangyun) as numerous. Also defined as respectful. In the Xunzi, Chapter on Confucius (Zhongni), it states: When a ruler respects him, he will be respectful and humble. Also used as a personal name. The fourth son of Xu Ling was named Zun. Textual research: The commentary on the passage concerning court officials in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Office of Heaven (Tianguan), should be corrected; based on the original text, the Office of Heaven has been cautiously changed to the Office of Autumn.
